What the historical record says
Moran anglicises the Gaelic Ó Móráin, "descendant of Mórán," a name built on mór, "great." The name was most prominent in Connacht, where a sept held territory at Ardnaree in County Mayo, with further families in Galway and Roscommon. In some districts Moran can also represent Ó Moráin or the unrelated Ó Mughróin. It remains strongly concentrated in Connacht, especially Mayo, with the Ó prefix dropped in the anglicised form now spelt Moran.
Recorded Gaelic root: Ó Móráin

What this evidence can—and cannot—prove
Census clustering can show where a surname appeared strongly at a historical point in time. It cannot identify your exact ancestor, prove a clan relationship, or assign a coat of arms. Use it as a source-backed starting point alongside family records and parish research.
