What the historical record says
Nolan anglicises the Gaelic Ó Nualláin, "descendant of Nuallán," a name from nuall, "a loud cry," and so read as "shouter" or "famous." The sept were lords of Foharta, modern Forth in County Carlow, and their chief held the hereditary and ceremonial privilege of inaugurating the kings of Leinster. Nolan remains a characteristic surname of Carlow and the south Leinster counties of Wexford and Kildare, its Ó prefix dropped in the anglicised form.
Recorded Gaelic root: Ó Nualláin

What this evidence can—and cannot—prove
Census clustering can show where a surname appeared strongly at a historical point in time. It cannot identify your exact ancestor, prove a clan relationship, or assign a coat of arms. Use it as a source-backed starting point alongside family records and parish research.
