What the historical record says
O'Leary anglicises the Gaelic Ó Laoghaire, "descendant of Laoghaire," an old personal name associated with herding, borne in legend by a High King of Ireland. The sept belonged originally to the Corca Laoighdhe of west County Cork and became firmly seated at Iveleary, around Inchigeelagh in the same county. O'Leary has remained overwhelmingly a Cork surname, concentrated in the west of the county, with the Ó prefix retained or dropped in the anglicised form.
Recorded Gaelic root: Ó Laoghaire

What this evidence can—and cannot—prove
Census clustering can show where a surname appeared strongly at a historical point in time. It cannot identify your exact ancestor, prove a clan relationship, or assign a coat of arms. Use it as a source-backed starting point alongside family records and parish research.
