What the historical record says
Scanlon anglicises the Gaelic Ó Scannláin, "descendant of Scannlán," a diminutive of a name connected with scannal, "contention." Rather than one family the name arose among several distinct septs, notably in the Munster counties of Cork and Limerick and in County Sligo, where the Ó Scannláin held land near Ballysadare. This scattered origin gave the name a broad spread. Scanlon, also spelt Scanlan, is most common across Munster and the north-west, its Ó prefix dropped.
Recorded Gaelic root: Ó Scannláin

What this evidence can—and cannot—prove
Census clustering can show where a surname appeared strongly at a historical point in time. It cannot identify your exact ancestor, prove a clan relationship, or assign a coat of arms. Use it as a source-backed starting point alongside family records and parish research.
